The World Around Us
THE WORLD AROUND US
We love exploring the ‘World Around Us’ at Ballymagee!
The World Around Us is a curricular area which focuses on the development of knowledge, skills and understanding in Geography, History and Science and Technology.
In Ballymagee, children have opportunities to investigate the world in which they live through themes and topics which promote ‘Connected learning.’ Our World Around Us topics focus on developing children’s interests in their world through a questioning and research based approach.
Through this curriculum area the natural curiosity of the children is valued, fostered and extended. Children across all Key Stages are provided with active, practical experiential learning opportunities to explore the world around them.
Members of the local community and beyond are invited into our school to share their knowledge of particular topics. These visits help to maintain our strong links with the community. They also help the children to make connections between learning in school and real life. The importance of meaningful learning experiences is strongly advocated within Ballymagee.
Educational trips are organised for class groups to help to enrich the curriculum and broaden the educational experiences of the children.
P2Cr - Science Investigation.
Following on from reading the book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’, we imagined that the bear got frozen on his way back to his cave. We discussed how we could save the bear by melting the ice and had 6 items, 3 which generated heat and three which did not. The children predicted which items would work best and worked in teams to try and free the bear. We then sat on the carpet and discussed what worked well and how we could improve the experiment next time.
